also helps to block the flow of calcium into the neurons. Zinc works well for people who cannot tolerate magnesium. However, zinc is a double edged sword, too much zinc will cause glutamate release. I find that I like to keep zinc at 15-25 mg per day. My preference, especially for autisitc children is to use our zinc lozenges. They can easily be broken into quarters to lessen the dose, and increase it gradually. The lozenges also contain slippery elm which is soothing for the gut.
