GABA- This is a calming neurotransmitter in the body that helps to balance glutamate. It should be useful to help decrease stress, and increase speech, eye contact, and social interactions. GABA comes in several forms and it will be a bit of trial and error to determine which is best. GABA Calm seems to work well for many individuals during the day; it melts in the mouth like a lozenge. For those who do not like the taste or prefer to swallow a pill, GABA is also available as a supplement to be swallowed. ZEN (GABA and Theanine) is nice to take later in the evening as it helps with sleep and stress.
Garlic- This has the potential to do many wonderful things: help maintain cholesterol levels that are already in the normal range and help the liver, participate in sulfur reactions in body.
Ginkgo- This has been reported to increase blood flow to the brain and to protect from damage due to nitric oxide. It may also help to slow the breakdown of dopamine as it has been reported to act as an MAO-B inhibitor. Ginkgo should be used with caution in individuals with blood pressure issues.
Glucosamine/MSM- Many people like to take a combination of glucosamine Chondroitin for arthritis. Others prefer a separate chondroitin supplement that is formulated to be well absorbed. Many chondroitin supplements or combination supplements are of a high molecular weight and are not easily absorbed. A glucosamine/MSM cream is also available.
Glucose support- There are a number of nutritional supplements and herbs that can be used as part of the diet to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels. This combination includes Vitamin E, magnesium, zinc, manganese, chromium, lagerstroemia speciosa, bitter melon, gymnema sylvestre, vanadyl sulfate, Jerusalem artichoke, fenugreek, milk thistle, ginkgo biloba, bilberry, alpha lipoic acid, citric bioflavonoids.
Glutathione- This is one of the most important supplements made by the body. It is helpful in programs designed to promote immune and neurological health. There are also reports in the literature that suggest that glutathione may be useful for cystic fibrosis. If glutathione is not specially formulated it degrades in the stomach if it is swallowed.
The options for glutathione support include specially formulated oral forms, lozenges, creams, nasal forms and IV pushes. The safest and least invasive approach to the use of glutathione is a combination of sublingual lozenges, specially formulated oral forms, use of glutathione capsules in a humidifier and topical creams. In addition, glutathione is available in toothpaste as well as a shampoo.
Goldenseal- This works well in conjunction with a number of other supplements that may have antimicrobial properties. One group that works extremely well together is Oregon Grape, Neem, Myrrh, Goldenseal, Cranberry, and Oregamax, +/- Uva Ursi.
Gotu Kola- This ayurvedic herb is excellent in conjunction with Bacopa. It has been reported to help with communication between the left and right sides of the brain. Using bacopa with gotu kola has been helpful with some autistic children in terms of communication.
Grape Seed Extract- This is reported to help to control glutamate by protecting the glutamate receptors and to repair nerves in the brain. It works well in conjunction with pycnogenol.
Green Tea- There are so many good things about green tea as a supplement. It has been described as helpful in everything from cancer prevention to helping to protect from sunburns, to increasing the metabolism for weight management. There is a topical Green Tea sunscreen to help protect against UV rays.
Guarana- This nutritional supplement has many times the level of caffeine found in coffee. Caffeine is not always a negative. It may be helpful for many individuals with migraine headaches. There is also information to suggest that caffeine can help with apoptosis, or programmed cell death that is necessary to aid in tumor or cancer surveillance. This can be looked at as a natural “pruning process’ that your body goes through, similar to the concept of pruning dead branches off trees in your yard. There have been reports that caffeine can replace the function of p53 in terms of its role in apoptosis.
Guggulipid-Ayur- This is useful in supporting the thyroid, for adolescent acne, and to support the immune system when working to eradicate chronic viral infection.
Gymnema-Ayur- This is an ayurvedic herb that helps to repair the pancreas, and helps with sugar regulation. If used on a regular basis this works well for children who become “hyper” after ingesting sugar.
